Sightseeing in Riga, Latvia

Latvia is one of Baltics countries that I’ve been dreaming to visit. Maybe this country is not probably familiar as tourist destination. Don’t get me wrong. This country has a lot of amazing places that tries to hypnotize your eyes and minds. Nothing else to make it clear. Amazing, stunning, mesmerizing and eye-catching cityscape and architect style were the reason why I really wanted to see it immediately (referenced to internet and social media). This visit went along with my European trip where my first start was Finland (I’m going to tell you on the next part). So, maybe Latvia was the middle of this trip.

I’m probably going to tell you my story about visiting this country briefly since I only had less than about 10 hours to visit and sightsee around the city. However, I still have tons of spectacular moments to share with you. So, this is why I’m writing this blog, and obviously tell you how you can get there to see many fabulous spots in Riga even I was there just less than 24 hours. Let’s see it!

Once Landed in Riga

Once landed, then I got outside the airport. And of course, let’s head out to the city where you can see the stunning city and sightsee around. The only way to get the city center is taking the bus. Went to the bus stop and looked up for the bus with number 27. I paid €10 for it, it’s able to pay with credit cards (Latvia still uses EUR as its currency). It took about 30 minutes to get there.

I didn’t know the name of stop bus definitely. Afterwards, looked up for it and the name supposed to be Naconala biblioteka (it’s probably Latvian). This is accessible to get the best spot of riga. This bus stop is really close to Akmens bridge, locals will probably say Akmens tilts. We can take nice photographs from here too.

I went for a walk through the Akmens bridge, and headed to the old town, the magnificent and stunning spot in Riga.

The most spot is needed visiting in Riga, of course, reaching out the steeple of St. Peter’s church, the tallest church in Riga. This church is also one of the oldest and most notable sacred buildings of medieval monumental architecture in the Baltic States. It was built in 1209, then rebuilt and enlarged several times. Its steeple offers you a breathtaking view of Latvia’s capital. We can see the 360° panoramic view from  there. However, we need to pay for €9 (for adults) to get there. I think it’s kind of worth it since it offers us the unforgettable scenery and landscape of Latvia’s heart.

Once got the ticket from the counter, we can immediately head up the steeple by taking the elevator. There was a guide that accompanied during getting up to the steeple. Be mindful while visiting in the winter since it’s a bit slippery, even when stepping on the steeple floor.

Here are some photos of the excellent panoramic and scenery of Riga from above I collected.

Other than that, at this church we can also a lot of things instead of visiting the steeple, for instance enjoying art exhibitions. This church also has tons of valued art displayed. Moreover, it’s possible for us to have a tour around inside this Lutheran church.

Roamed into the street of old town

I was satisfied to have a tour in St. Peter’s church. In my personal preference, it’s enough to enjoyed the view of Latvia’s capital from above and see the iconic scenery of Riga. However, my trip didn’t stop there. I tried to roam and explore into the magnificent boxy building in the old town of Riga, with hope I could see the exceptional treasures.

Collected some photos while roaming into the old city.

Walking along the snowy street and getting the falling snowflake accompanied my walk just made my short winter trip in this white land so fabulous. I thought that I was in the dreamland. It was a European dream. I could still feel the vibe of medieval century.

I unintentionally visited the House of the Black Heads (in Latvian it’s probably called Melngalvju nams) where’s located in the old town center of Riga, near from St. Peter’s church. It’s one of the landmark buildings in Riga from 14th century as it was erected as a warehouse, meeting and celebration for merchants in 1334. As the moment happened to me, I saw some people and kids played around with snow. Snowfall didn’t break their fun at all.

Also, I went through the Riga cathedral, the oldest medieval church and one of the oldest religious buildings in Latvia and in the whole Baltic region. It was the last place I visited. It’s actually allowed to come inside as it open for visitors. It probably has an admission €5 for adults, €3 for children aged 11 - 18, and free for children aged under 10. You may have a nice tour and good understanding about the history of this Evangelical Lutheran church.

It was unfortunately that I couldn’t explore Riga for more. However, I hope to can make it longer in the future to explore Latvia for much more, not only Riga.

At the end, I had too much fun to enjoy this panoramic of Riga, even within the short time. It can be a reference for you to have a sightseeing while having an enough layover or transit in Latvia. From this trip I learn that we don’t have to take so much time to enjoy the moment and fun. It means we still can make a happiness in every little chance. I hope you will have a lot of fun while visiting Riga.

Let’s explore Riga, don’t miss your precious moments there!

See you!
